If you were a card collector in the 80's, you will definitely remember the Bill Ripken card that created quite a stir in the hobby. If you are not familiar with the story, Bill Ripken is the brother of Hall of Famer Cal Ripken, Jr. and also played for the Orioles for a few seasons. The 1989 Fleer card of Bill showed him posing with a bat on his shoulder, and on the bottom of the bat, there was a profane phrase written in sharpie that is very easily seen on the original card. The card created a huge stir and skyrocketed in value almost overnight. Fleer pulled the card and reissued it with quite a few different corrected versions, 12 total versions according to the CNBC article. I found it interesting that Bill admitted to writing the phrase on the bat, but that it was much smaller than it appeared on the card, and he feels that Fleer intentionally enhanced the letters for publicity. If they did, it definitely worked.
